Jan. 5--Within the first quarter of 2005, the world's largest broadband satellite, iPSTAR, will be launched into orbit and its owner, Shin Satellite, will start raking in revenues from a variety of services which have been described as a major turning point for Thailand's telecom industry.

Globally, the telecom industry has seen change at a frenetic pace in the past decade.

Looking back just five years ago, the situation resembled colonial rule, with global telecom players such as Deutsche Telecom and Swiss Telecom dominating the Asian market and local business opportunities, particularly in India.
