Jan. 5--Thai shares rallied 2.45 percent after a long, silent New Year holiday as the gloomy sentiment following the disaster in the South eased.

The Stock Exchange of Thailand index closed at 684.48 points, up16.38, in brisk trade worth 23.53 billion baht. Leading gains were bank shares which soared 4.37 percent, followed by the energy sector, up 1.53 percent and construction materials, up 4.49 percent.

Construction material stocks led the sharp rally on hopes that there would be a greater demand for building materials to restored hotels and properties damaged by the tidal waves in the six provinces.
