Advanced Micro Devices aims to have a starring role in what some observers believe will be the next hot consumer electronics device -- personal media players.
With PMPs, people can download TV shows, movies or any content from TV set-top boxes or PCs to watch wherever and whenever they want.
AMD on Monday unveiled a new chip, the Alchemy AU1200, designed for PMPs. It'll showcase the product Thursday through Sunday in Las Vegas at the big Consumer Electronics Show, which kicks off with a keynote address from Craig Barrett, chief executive of Intel.
The No. 2 PC chipmaker, AMD, like its larger archrival Intel, is looking for other markets as PC sales growth slows. And the markets they're finding are mostly consumer electronics.
