U.S. agency wants tsunami alerts
The chief of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said the Caribbean and Atlantic coastlines would benefit from a tsunami warning system, even though risk of earthquakes that cause the destructive waves are small. The Caribbean has experienced more than 50 tsunamis in the past 150 years, and the Atlantic has had over 30, half off the U.S. and Canadian coasts. Pacific Asia's tsunami warning system links 26 countries, but didn't include India and Sri Lanka, hard-hit by last month's tsunami.
