Ex-Presidents Lead Tsunami Push
1President Bush tapped George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton to lead a U.S. charity campaign for victims of the Dec. 26 tsunami that's killed nearly 140,000. In hard-hit Indonesia, U.S. military copters helped distribute food, water and medicine to millions of survivors threatened by disease and hunger. The U.S. has pledged at least $350 mil in aid, plus heavy use of military resources.
Stocks Kick Off '05 With Losses
2Falling oil and solid Wal-Mart sales failed to offset weak factory hiring and construction data. The Dow fell 0.5% and the S&P 500 0.8%, hurt by Merck and Pfizer. NYSE trade returned from light pre-holiday volume to average levels. Small caps fared the worst, as the S&P 600 lost 1.8%. The Nasdaq fell 1.1% on a jump back to higher-than-normal turnover. Oil Prices Fall On Mild Weather
3Feb. crude dived over $2 before settling down $1.33 to $42.12 a barrel on above-normal Northeast temps and expectations that Wed. reports will show higher heating oil inventories. Heating oil futures fell to the lowest level since early Sept. Also, retail gasoline prices fell 1.3 cents over the last week to $1.778 a gallon, the 9th straight drop and the lowest since late March. More on B13
