ITEM: The Pentagon, said a Newsday article on November 16, "has agreed to warn military bases worldwide not to directly sponsor Boy Scout troops, partially resolving claims that the government has engaged in religious discrimination by supporting a group that requires members to believe in God." Continued the Associated Press account: "Civil liberties advocates have set their sights on the organization's policies because the group bans openly gay scout leaders and compels members to swear an oath of duty to God. The ACLU believes that direct government sponsorship of such a program amounts to discrimination. 'If our Constitution's promise of religious liberty is to be a reality, the government should not be administering religious oaths or discriminating based on religious beliefs,' said ACLU attorney Adam Schwartz."
CORRECTION: The radical ACLU has declared war against the Boy Scouts because the private group has an oath that dares to mention God and does not want perverted troop leaders. However, to suggest that the occasional Scout use of military property represents federal establishment of religion is so absurd it should even embarrass ACLU lawyers--if they were capable of embarrassment.
Also, the mass media, ever quick to declare a victory for radicals, is exaggerating again. In essence, attorneys for the Pentagon came to a "partial agreement" with the ACLU over a 1999 lawsuit: the Defense Department agreed not to do what it has not been doing in the first ...
