On Wednesday, November 10, at 4 a.m., Steven Brown, the owner of Western Lights Mobil Mart in Syracuse, New York, had to use a shotgun to defend himself from a would-be robber, according to The Post-Standard of November 11.
Mr. Brown, whose store had been robbed twice in the past--once when an employee was robbed by a gun-wielding thief and once when an assailant pulled a knife on Mr. Brown--was working the midnight-to-8 a.m. shift, as he usually does so that his employees are not exposed to danger, when the incident occurred.
At 4 a.m., a man, later identified as Elwood Powell, buzzed Brown to be allowed into the store. Once inside, Powell "just started acting suspicious." Police spokesman Sergeant Tom Connellan relayed Mr. Brown's version of the incident: "Powell tucked his head, put his hand to his side as if pulling out a weapon, and charged Mr. Brown.... 'He tried to bum-rush Mr. Brown.'"
