Jan. 1--The most intense competition in Thailand's retail business in 2005 will involve convenience store brands, while the race to expand hypermarket locations will be slowed by new retail zoning regulations, according to industry executives.
The battle lines will be clearly drawn this year, with at least 1,000 stores both in stand-alone formats and those located in service stations being added to the market. This will bring the total number of convenience stores in Thailand to around 6,000, compared with 5,000 at the end of 2004.
