The S&P 500 slumped 0.1% Friday and the Dow industrials 0.2% in lower New Year's Eve volume. For the week, the S&P rose 0.2% and the Dow slipped 0.4% in below-average trading.
Oregon Steel Mills gained 0.95 to 20.29 in more than double normal volume. Friday's action follows an 11% drop Thursday on news that China's new status as a net exporter could hurt steel makers. It regained most of Thursday's losses. The company returned to profitability in 2004 after losing money in 2003.
Commercial Metals rose 0.66 to close at 50.56 in heavy volume. It too got slammed by Thursday's China news, but regained some ground Friday. The maker and recycler of steel increased earnings between 311% and 1,436% in the past four quarters. But First Call says analysts expect earnings growth to decline in 2005 and 2006.
