Byline: AMY REEVES
Obesity, sleeplessness, old age. They're all growing problems in the U.S. That's why drug makers have so much in the pipeline to treat these and related health problems.
The coming year likely will bring major drugs for diabetes -- a fast-growing market as the U.S. gets fatter -- and age-related problems such as incontinence and sight loss.
According to analysts IBD consulted, the following top drugs are up for approval in 2005.
** Exenatide. Amylin Pharmaceuticals has been developing this Type 2 (adult-onset) diabetes drug together with Eli Lilly.
The Food and Drug Administration is reviewing the data and should decide by April 30 whether to approve it.
Exenatide would be the first of a new class of drugs called incretin mimetics. They only work when sugar is present in the body, cutting the danger of overdose and insulin shock. They help balance out the glucose levels in the body, normally uneven in diabetics.
