Mobile gaming was the top story in the video game industry last year and will continue to be a big deal this year.
But the headline grabbers in 2005 likely will be the next generation of living-room game consoles from Microsoft, Nintendo and Sony.
Microsoft is rumored to be targeting a fall 2005 launch for its second-generation Xbox, dubbed Xbox 2 or Xbox Next.
The Redmond, Wash., software giant wants to get the jump on market leader Sony, which is poised to launch its latest console, unofficially called PlayStation 3, in the spring of 2006 in Japan and fall of 2006 in North America.
Microsoft likely will detail the technical specifications for its Xbox 2 at or before the Game Developers Conference in March in San Francisco. Sony may wait until the Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles in May to discuss the successor to its PlayStation 2 console.
Nintendo already has staked out E3 for detailing the follow-up to its GameCube, code-named Revolution.
