Byline: IBD STAFF
2004 was an up-and-down year for business. The sale of durable goods was up, but retail wasn't as strong as expected toward year's end and home sales dipped.
Add in the fact that U.S. troops remain in Iraq, and the economic atmosphere has felt uncertain.
But there were strong performers that made a notable showing in 2004.
Five of them were headed by remarkable people who exhibited vision, determination and innovation -- qualities that kept their businesses at the head of the pack during the past year and made them IBD's top five business leaders of 2004.
The list, presented here, was compiled by reviewing Leaders & Success articles on current chief executives.
After examining the candidates, staff members chose those who best embody the initiative and commitment needed to succeed. There are no rankings for those included on the list. Every leader we've included has a unique way of making his firm stand out.
