An exhibition entitled Circling the Square: Avant-garde Porcelain from Revolutionary Russia can be seen in the Hermitage Rooms at Somerset House. Russia's first porcelain factory was founded in 1744 on the Riva Neva, some six miles from St Petersburg. Empress Elizabeth ordered an allocation of serf workers to the factory, and from then on the same names appear on employee lists for nearly two centuries.
