In a twist on the traditional plea of the homeless man, "Buddy, can you spare a dime?" a group of homeless New York City people and friends spared enough loose change to help out the family of an NYPD officer who had been penalized for his act of compassion toward one of them. It all started when Officer Eduardo Delacruz was ordered to arrest a homeless man for sleeping in a parking garage. He refused, saying that he would not arrest people who had nowhere else to go. One month before Christmas 2002, he was suspended without pay for 30 days. It meant the loss of $3,600 in pay for the policeman, who is married with five children.
