Dec. 17--Consumers in Arizona and 12 other Western states will be getting refunds after paying bogus charges for credit reports that are supposed to be free.
Credit bureaus are required to provide the free credit reports to consumers in 13 Western states under the Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act. The law went into effect Dec. 1 and is meant to help people take control of their finances.
The new program began in the Western states. It will be available in stages to residents of other states over the next 10 months.
But one of the nation's three major credit bureaus, TransUnion, has responded to requests with form letters that don't disclose the free option and instead show the outdated cost.
