2005 Mercury Mariner
Date in fleet: Nov. 29-Dec. 13 As-tested price: $29,550 Powertrain: 3.0-liter V6; 4wd, four-speed automatic Output: 200 hp @ 6000 rpm, 193 lb-ft @ 4850 rpm Curb weight: 3520 pounds
GRITZINGER: This upscale Ford Escape has everything I want in a practical, stylish and comfortable vehicle-and none of the bloated-ute qualities I don't. It's a smaller, more nimble vehicle that remains capable of hauling a ton of stuff. This isn't an SUV in the BMW X5 sense, but rather one in the functional sense-what an SUV should be.
ROCA: I love the Mariner's seats. The microsuede inserts and leather surrounding them is very cool, a nice pattern and material. The rest of the interior is pretty nice. I do have an issue, though: Merging on to the freeway, I just didn't feel like there was enough power available. I had the throttle to the floor and the engine buzz had me thinking this had a four-cylinder underhood, even though I knew that wasn't likely.
WILSON: I'm with Bob in that this is much nicer than the Ford version, with just enough luxury touches to make it livable. But I also agree with Carrie that this motor isn't strong enough for the job. It's fine with one person, but I can't imagine it works with four up, or serious cargo, or even a light tow. While I was thinking that I mostly agree with Bob that SUVs shouldn't try to be sports cars, they also need enough grunt to be SUVs. This is a tall station wagon with SUV styling cues.
