Personnel changes
Travis Kvapil, a 28-year-old former NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series champion from Janesville, Wisconsin, will drive for Penske Racing South on the NASCAR Nextel Cup circuit in 2005. Kvapil takes the seat vacated by Brendan Gaughan, who drove the Cup car for one year. Gaughan, who came to Penske Racing after driving for his family's Craftsman Truck team, finished 28th in the 2004 Nextel Cup points standings. Gaughan has not officially announced his intentions for '05, but it is believed he will return to his family's truck team.
Elsewhere, Evernham Motorsports has signed Erin Crocker to a contract. Crocker, the first female to win a World of Outlaws race, will compete next year in select Silver Crown, ARCA and NASCAR Busch Series races. In addition to her racing career, Crocker recently earned her degree in Industrial and Management Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York. Crocker had been schooled in Ford's driver development program (AW, Sept. 13) before Ray Evernham signed her.
Speaking of Ford, the Blue Oval signed 19-year-old USAC National Midget Car Series champ Bobby East to a long-term contract. East, son of legendary USAC team owner and car builder Bob East, is the youngest USAC National champion in the organization's 49-year history. East will continue to run at least one more season in the Midget Series and the USAC Silver Crown Series while Ford arranges for him to test a variety of NASCAR race vehicles, with an eye on moving eventually to the Nextel Cup.
