The classic car aficionado who transformed the hobby of classic car collection and restoration into the 100-point perfection we now see at Pebble Beach every year, died Dec. 6. J.B. Nethercutt was 91.
In his lifetime Nethercutt amassed a collection of more than 200 cars from all eras and from all over the world. He housed them at San Sylmar in Sylmar, California, his museum that is now and always has been free and open to the public.
Nethercutt, who made his fortune by co-founding Merle Norman Cosmetics, began collecting in 1956 with the purchase of a 1936 Duesenberg Model JN Coupe and a 1930 DuPont town car. His painstaking 18-month restoration of the DuPont resulted in the first of a record six Best in Show ...
