CUP LITE?
From every angle the 2004 Busch Series looked like Nextel Cup Lite rather than the developmental stand-alone series it should be. Cup drivers won 18 of 34 races and full-time Busch drivers from well-heeled Cup teams won 14 of the other 16. Mike Wallace at Daytona Beach in July and Justin Labonte eight days later in Chicago were the only true Busch winners from true Busch teams.
Cup driver Greg Biffle (third in points) won five races, Matt Kenseth and Jamie McMurray three each, Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Kevin Harvick two each and Michael Waltrip, Joe Nemechek and Robby Gordon won one each. Series champion Martin Truex Jr. (six victories) drove for Dale Earnhardt Inc. and runner-up Kyle Busch (five) for Hendrick Motorsports. Fourth-ranked Ron Hornaday Jr. won once for Richard Childress Racing, fifth-ranked Mike Bliss once for Joe Gibbs Racing and Jason Leffler won once for Haas CNC Racing.
Series veterans Jason Keller and David Green (the '94 champion) were sixth and seventh in points. Ashton Lewis Jr. (in his family's unsponsored car), Kenny Wallace and David Stremme completed the top-10. Truex Jr. took the points lead at midseason and clinched the title at the next-to-last race at Darlington in November.
