Six still standing
Drumroll, please. The finalists for 2005 North American Car of the Year honors are Chevrolet C6 Corvette, Chrysler 300/300C and Ford Mustang. North American Truck of the Year finalists: Ford Escape Hybrid, Ford Freestyle and Land Rover LR3. For more on the finalists, go to autoweek.com.
Winners, as chosen by a panel of 48 automotive journalists, will be announced Jan. 9 at the Detroit auto show.
Passat in passing
Volkswagen's sixth-generation Passat makes its world debut at the Geneva motor show in March, but the company is already taking the wraps off photos of its stylish new sedan. Due here next fall, the 2006 model comes with either a 2.0-liter, 200-hp turbo four or a 3.6-liter, 280-hp V6. Six-speed manual and automatic transmissions will be offered.
Hybrid Hemi?
General Motors and DaimlerChrysler will cooperate on gasoline/diesel and electric hybrid powertrains, an area in which neither company has shown much leadership when it comes to production. GM's Chevrolet Tahoe and GMC Yukon will be the first hybrid beneficiaries in late 2007, followed by the Dodge Durango. Mercedes hybrids are also planned.
