Winston-Salem firm Quality Oil uses diverse businesses to stay competitive.

Dec. 13--There is a lot more to Quality Oil Co. LLC than its name implies.

The Winston-Salem company, best-known for its heating-oil operation and its Quality Mart and Quality Plus Smoke Shop outlets, also has its hands in other businesses across the region, including real-estate development, petroleum distribution, home propane delivery, and hotels.

Diversification is nothing new for Quality Oil, which was founded in 1929 and is celebrating its 75th anniversary this month.

"That's just been a heritage almost since '29," said Graham Bennett, the president of Quality Oil and grandson of Bert Bennett Sr., one of the two men who bought Quality Oil in 1930. The other was Joe Glenn -- Bennett Sr.'s nephew.

The company began as a heating-oil distributor for Shell Oil Co. and was originally owned by W.H. Leonard and a partner for a year before Glenn and Bert …
