I have an affinity for black men, particularly artistic, culturally aware brothas--poets, musicians and artists who sport dreadlocks or untamed afros. Since the late 1980s, my neighborhood of Ft. Green, Brooklyn has been the place to find them in abundance. It is not unusual to step into a cafe and see tables of black couples huddle together, looking as if they're sharing a wicked secret, or walking hand-in-hand as if they hold the strength of creation between their palms. But recently the neighborhood has signs of gentrification everywhere: from the new massive Pathmark grocery store to the rising rents to the white homeowners and tenants who are becoming regular faces ...
