With gadgets and content-playing devices galore at retail outlets and online shopping sites this holiday season, there's one interesting combination that's also come to market featuring digital music and DVDs in one package.
Napster, a division of Roxio, and Blockbuster Inc. have joined forces to offer a Digital Duo card that gives consumers one month of digital music and one month of Blockbuster Online DVD rental service for $20. The Digital Duo card will be offered exclusively at more than 5,000 RadioShack stores across the United States during the initial launch period.
The card provides unlimited access to Napster's million-plus song library, as well as two a la carte track downloads, and unlimited Blockbuster Online DVD rentals with up to three movies out at a time, plus two free in-store movie or game rentals, for the month-long duration of the card.
Launched in time for the 2004 holiday season, the Digital Duo card offers 32-percent savings off a $29.42 retail value. Intended to make digital entertainment content a choice for gift-giving, the card not only gives consumers an online shopping and renting opportunity, but it also includes two free in-store rental coupons each month for last-minute, gotta-have-it-now rentals, geared specifically to drawing customers into Blockbuster stores.
"Blockbuster Online has the instant brand recognition and massive catalog that make it the natural partner for Napster, and we're excited to be introducing the Digital Duo card together," says Napster's senior vice president of business development, Larry Linietsky. "Aligning the complementary subscription services to offer consumers a better value is a win-win for everyone. Now you can listen to music from Napster while you browse for DVD titles on Blockbuster Online. We expect this to be an extremely popular gift item during the holidays at RadioShack."
Ben Cooper, director of acquisition marketing and business development for Blockbuster Online, added, "We believe people who like the convenience of going online for their music are going to like being able to do the same for their movies."
