Boxster coupe coup
The coupe version of Porsche's entry-level Boxster roadster is set for launch next year as the Boxster GTS, but the German automaker is already considering a lightweight Clubsport version of the fixed-roof sports car.
Tentatively planned for 2006, the stripped two-door Boxster GTS Clubsport (sans air conditioning, audio system and sound deadening) may serve as the basis for an extension of Porsche's motorsport activities, say sources in Zuffenhausen. Other changes include a more free-flowing exhaust to sharpen throttle response, a higher redline, and a lower final-drive ratio for improved off-the-line acceleration. Suspension changes have already netted lateral acceleration figures of up to 1.2 g, says our Porsche source.
Selling Saleen
Mustang tuner turned supercar big wheel Saleen has three new members on its board: Detroit car guy/businessman Dan Reiner; Los Angeles collector car guy/business-man Bruce Meyer; and L.A. mega-dealer/car customizer Beau Boeckmann. This should add more management expertise to the once-troubled manufacturer, which was purchased one year ago by Santa Monica investment group Hancock Park Associates.
Yes, purchased. Reports from Saleen last year said only that the company had found new investors; now comes word those investors bought a majority stake in Saleen and installed new management. Steve Saleen remains at the heart of his namesake company and retains the title of CEO, but Hancock Park makes all major business decisions.
