2005 Pontiac G6
Date in fleet: Nov. 17-22 As-tested price: $28,275 Powertrain: 3.5-liter V6; fwd, four-speed automatic Output: 200 hp @ 5400 rpm, 220 lb-ft @ 3800 rpm Curb weight: 3428 pounds
RAYNAL: As a Grand Am replacement, this car is good. As a competitive midsizer, hmmm...
I say that only because I look at the $28,000 sticker and about spill my coffee. Last week I drove a lovely, well-equipped Accord EX with a $5,000 cheaper sticker. Why should I pay five grand more for the Pontiac? The car is okay: no better, no worse. The seats? They're okay. Build quality? Pretty good. Ride/handling? Not bad, not spectacular. Steering? Too light.
The Grand Am was way long in the tooth and this car is better, no question, if for no other reason than it looks a lot nicer. I can't see myself picking it over an Accord or, say, a Mazda 6. Of course, if forced at gunpoint, I'd wait until the incentives kick in, which should be in about, oh, six minutes.
WILSON: Entirely acceptable, not exceptional, the G6 is a Malibu with cosmetics that appeal more to car enthusiasts. What's truly remarkable is that there is nothing really bad to say about a GM entry that vies for attention with Accord or Camry. It's a competitive entry; not a world-beater, but up to modern standards.
