Dec. 7--Gov. Mike Easley is blocking the transfer of 330 acres of state land to the Currituck County government, saying he won't sell it for the $1 that key legislators say they approved.

The dispute has involved powerful state Sen. Marc Basnight, a Manteo Democrat who heads the Senate, and members of the Council of State, which oversees all state property deals.

At issue is a total of 535 acres at and surrounding the Currituck County Airport, a former World War II landing strip that has been in state hands for decades.
