Alex Hsu says he defected to Taiwan's ruling party because of old-fashioned political pork--specifically, two marinas and a highway for his remote county of Taitung, 350 kilometers southeast of Taipei. Hsu is the 51-year-old magistrate of Taitung, and last month he quit the Kuomintang-led opposition to campaign for a candidate loyal to Taiwan's resurgent president, Chen Shui-bian. His support could garner Chen's Democratic Progressive Party an additional legislative seat in critical elections this week--and by offering it, Hsu reasons, he will have cemented Taipei's backing for local public ...
