Promising employees greater savings, consumer-directed health plans are likely to grow rapidly as an option for employees in 2005 and 2006, according to a survey of employers released last week by Mercer Human Resource Consulting. Some 26% of large companies are planning to offer them in the next two years, the survey found.

Though only 4% of employers with 500 or more employees currently offer such health plans, 14% of survey respondents said they are likely to offer one in 2005 and 26% said they likely would offer one in 2005 or 2006.

Moreover, the survey shows that the healthcare cost growth rate continued to ease in 2004.…
