Joe Beaver's roping skills are more refined and his hair is smattered with gray, but competing in the National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas makes him feel like a kid again. He still recalls competing in 1985 when he was a rookie in the first NFR at the Thomas & Mack Center.
"I remember being in awe of Las Vegas as we drove into town that first year," he said. "I knew I was here and that I should be here, but that feeling still sticks with me today of that night in 1985."
Beaver, 39, will start his 19th NFR tonight, missing only the 1999 event with an injury.
