Cable sports network ESPN is tackling the wireless phone business via an alliance with Sprint Corp.
Owned by Walt Disney, ESPN plans to launch a subscription service targeting sports fans in mid-2005. ESPN will buy airtime from Sprint and resell minutes to its customers.
ESPN Mobile plans to sell games, video content, sports data and other services to wireless customers.
Sprint sells its own mobile phone service, but it's steadily built up a resale business as well. Sprint's biggest wholesale customer is Virgin Mobile USA. It's also signed up Qwest Communications Internationaland AT&T, which use Sprint's network to sell their own mobile phone services.
Many analysts expect cable TV companies to resell wireless services from Sprint as well.
Sprint should benefit from the wholesale deals, but it's dealing the industry a wild card by letting non-telecom companies such as ESPN enter the wireless business, analysts say. It's unclear whether new players like ESPN will attract new mobile phone users or siphon growth from established wireless firms.
