Natalie Coughlin doesn't settle for second best.
So many were surprised when Coughlin elected to forgo the women's 200-meter freestyle swimming competition at this summer's Athens Olympics in order to swim the 4 x 200 women's freestyle relay with three teammates.
Coughlin's known for slaying the competition in the individual event. So why give up the chance for personal glory?
Coughlin, 24, didn't look at it that way at all. Her strong sense of teamwork told her the team needed her.
Her loyalty to her teammates paid off, too. They overturned a world record set by illegally doped East German swimmers in 1987, earning the U.S. team a gold medal.
The positive attitude she maintains didn't hurt either. Coughlin didn't consider her decision to be anything but a great opportunity.
