Apparel firms rebound on reports
Standard & Poor's Retail Index climbed 1.6% after strong Q3 results at Chico's FAS and an upbeat analyst report lifted a sector that had sunk after disappointing weekend sales. Chico's earned 41 cents a share in Q3, up 52%. It gained 13% to 43.66; Bebe Stores rose 7% to 38.95; Abercrombie & Fitch rose 2% to 46.53; and Jos. A. Bank Clothiers climbed 5% to 27.74.
Blockbuster may lift bid for rival
The movie rental chain said it's willing to pay more than the $11.50-a-share offer it made Nov. 11 to rival Hollywood Entertainment, which has already agreed to a management and private equity buyout deal worth $10.25 a share. A third rival, Movie Gallery, has also made an undisclosed offer for Hollywood. Blockbuster rose 5.5% to 8.93. Hollywood rose 2% to 12.93.
** Dollar General earned 22 cents a share in Q3, down 4% and 3 cents under views. Shares rose 1.5% to 20.02.
