Ageing pipeline threatens Turkmen gas exports.(Central Asia)

Turkmen natural gas production and exports could fall this year following a fatal accident that destroyed a compressor station on the Central Asia-Centre (CAC) pipeline in Kazakhstan earlier this month.

November exports by Turkmenistan--the FSU's second-largest gas producer--have been running at 108mn-100mn [m.sup.3]/d compared with the usual 125mn-130mn [m.sup.3]/d, says Alexander Ryazanov, deputy chairman of Gazprom, which ships Turkmen gas to Ukraine and Russia.

"If we can only pump 3.5bn [m.sup.3] in December, the total volume for 2004 will be 32bn-33bn [m.sup.3], and Gazprom is obliged to ship 34bn [m.sup.3]," he said at a recent conference in the Turkmen …
