The under-30 crowd is Virgin Mobile USA's bread and butter -- not that people in that age group eat a lot of high-carb food.
They do, however, consume plenty of add-on products for their mobile phone services.
More than 70% of Virgin Mobile USA's 2 million-plus subscribers are under the age of 30. Two-thirds of its customers use text messaging. They also have a big appetite for other nonvoice services -- ring tones, picture messaging and downloadable games.
In mid-November, Virgin Mobile signed a pact with Nokia, the biggest maker of mobile phones. Analysts expect Virgin Mobile and Nokia to launch co-branded phones with advanced multimedia capabilities in 2005.
Virgin Mobile is a joint venture of Britain's Virgin Group and Sprint. Unlike the big wireless firms, which typically require customers to sign contracts, Virgin Mobile offers prepaid services. Its subscribers pay for airtime in advance.
Boost Mobile, owned by Nextel Communications, and other wireless firms are now targeting the youth market as well.
