Price war seen at brokerages
E-Trade Financial and AmeriTrade shares dipped 2.5% each after a report by Banc of America Securities suggested a price war on commission fees will slash the industry's bottom line. Charles Schwab, the nation's largest online brokerage, announced in October that it would cut its base online stock trading fee to $19.95 from $29.95 this month. AmeriTrade charges a flat fee of $10.99 for online orders. E-Trade offers a $9.99 flat fee to its most active traders, but those who use the online services more sporadically are charged $19.99.
Calpers president may be ousted
The head of the California Public Employees' Retirement System said he'll likely be replaced when his term expires early next year. Sean Harrigan, a union representative, used Calpers' $177 bil investment portfolio as leverage to push corporate reforms, including calling for the resignations of the CEOs of Disney and Safeway.
