Icahn loses grip on Mylan Labs
Asset manager Richard Perry neutralized investor Carl Icahn's hostile takeover bid for the generic drug maker by becoming the No. 1 shareholder in Mylan Laboratories. Icahn made the $5.4 bil bid because he opposed Mylan's proposed $4 bil buyout of King Pharmaceuticals. Perry holds a 7 mil share stake in King. Perry Corp now owns 9.89% of Mylan, topping Icahn's 9.8%. King rose 7.5% to 12.45; Mylan fell 1% to 18.16.
Syneron Med drops on FDA move
The maker of cosmetic medical devices plunged 27% to 27.05 after the FDA rejected its application for its VelaSmooth cellulite-smoothing device. The FDA said Syneron Medical must reapply under a more stringent category. The Israeli company said it plans to ask for an investigational device exemption, which will let it use VelaSmooth in a clinical study to collect safety and effectiveness data.
Novartis pulls drug application
The drug firm is temporarily shelving a European Union application for its painkiller Prexige; it's delayed a U.S. filing several times. The drug is a cox-2 inhibitor, the same class of drugs as Merck's withdrawn Vioxx. EU authorities are reviewing cox-2 inhibitors for safety concerns. At one point, Prexige was thought to be a blockbuster with $2 bil annual sales. Novartis fell 2% to 48.05.
