Krispy Kreme tests bite-sized doughnut holes in North Carolina stores.

Dec. 1--Krispy Kreme Doughnuts Inc. is testing bite-sized doughnut holes, a new product for the company, in its Triad stores.

Krispy Kreme is hoping that the doughnut holes -- along with other new products -- will help increase sales, which have faltered this year.

"We believe that this product has the potential to create incremental sales for us in both retail and wholesale," Scott Livengood, the company's chief executive, said on a conference call last week. "We'll broaden the test in the fourth quarter and anticipate beginning a systemwide rollout after the first of the year."
