The nation's three major credit-reporting agencies announced today in a joint news release that consumers in 13 Western states will be able to order free credit reports under their new, centralized Web site beginning Dec. 1. The Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act of 2003, or FACT Act, requires each of the credit bureaus to provide one free report annually to consumers upon request for any reason. Most of the FACT Act's sweeping provisions are scheduled to take effect in December, though various federal agencies are still working on regulations.
