The REPLACE-2 clinical trial economic study was authored by David J. Cohen, MD, Harvard Clinical Research Institute, et al., and published in the November issue of the Journal of the American College of Cardiology (Vol. 44, Nov. 9, 2004).
The study was accompanied by an editorial comment paper by David F. Kong, MD, and Daniel B. Mark, MD (Duke Clinical Research Institute), who noted, "Bivalirudin appears to provide health benefits similar to existing therapies but for less money, a "win" for all parties. Economists refer to a therapy that fulfills these conditions as "dominant" and would expect its wide adoption into general practice."
The economic study was pre-specified in the protocol of the REPLACE-2 clinical trial, one of the largest studies of acute anticoagulation therapies (known as antithrombotics) ever conducted in patients undergoing percutaneous intervention.
