2004 Mazda RX-8
Date in fleet: Oct. 13-26 As-tested price: $41,566 Powertrain: 1.3-liter twin-rotary; rwd, six-speed manual Output: 238 hp @ 8500 rpm, 159 lb-ft @ 5500 rpm Curb weight: 3029 pounds
LUU: Don't be confused: This is not a MazdaSpeed-tuned car so much as it is a car tuned by MazdaSpeed equipment. The difference is that one comes equipped with all the parts, whereas this car showcases mostly the cosmetic and suspension upgrades. Still, this car has been transformed in every way. It looks more like the Japanese muscle car I expected when the RX-8 debuted. The exhaust system enhancement is equally subtle, but it brings the rotary engine into perfect tune. This RX-8 seems to rev so much more quickly and smoothly than the stock. It shifts crisply and pulls strongly in the mid-range.
Updates to the suspension-where the bulk of the MazdaSpeed money is spent-feel more integrated than your typical aftermarket job. The setup is stiffer, but it maintains the stock car's friendly around-town nature.
RAYNAL: This is one tough little car. It has a mean, roaring exhaust note and looks pretty cool-though I can't quite make up my mind about the rear wing. The ride is not too stiff, the steering is spot-on. The rotary just revs and revs and revs, and it pulls like gangbusters.
Would I want one? The modifications are largely cosmetic, so I guess overall I'd prefer my RX-8 to be mostly stock-and about $14,000 cheaper. But this is fun. I'd take the sport exhaust and some of the front-end mods but could do without the side cladding or rear wing. And no gold wheels, please.
BLAHNIK: Ouch! Talk about sticker shock. No doubt this car looks tough, but those looks don't come cheaply.
