A trip to the Milwaukee County Zoo is not complete without a ride on their nostalgic train--an antique steam locomotive that is a must-see--especially for any train enthusiasts. The zoo's two coal-burning locomotives rack up thousands of miles every year as they pull train cars throughout the zoo grounds.

The challenge
Donated to the zoo by the local newspaper, these locomotives are a significant part of the zoo's history. However, more than 30 years of riding the zoo rails left these high-profile locomotives in need of maintenance. The valve sleeves on the steam chests were cracked and had to be removed and replaced--without destroying other components on these historical icons.
Although the zoo is open year-round, the trains do not run in the winter. This is when heavy maintenance and repairs are performed on equipment. Milwaukee's In-Place Machining was called on to help repair the valve sleeves and perform other maintenance.
