DALLAS _ Several major pharmaceutical firms announced plans Monday to begin adding radio-frequency identification tags to some of their most popular drugs over the next few years.
Pfizer Inc., GlaxoSmithKline and Purdue Pharma LP all said they will begin working on RFID tags, paper-thin computer chips attached to an antenna that can transmit small amounts of data to scanners or readers.
The Food and Drug Administration is supporting the initiative, saying the tags should help reduce counterfeiting.
