Sainz hangs it up
Two-time World Rally champion (1990 and '92) Carlos Sainz announced his retirement from the sport after more than a decade at the top. The 42-year-old Spaniard who has driven for Citroen for the last two years said, "It is time, after 16 years of competing, to dedicate my life to my family. In these last two years we've won the manufacturers' championship and I achieved my 26th WRC victory in the Rally of Argentina.'' Sainz competed in the Spanish rally, finishing third, and will run in Australia Nov. 19-21.
Burton is in
Jeff Burton has replaced Robby Gordon in the No. 31 Cingular Chevrolet for the rest of the Nextel Cup season, as well as for 2005. Gordon plans to drive for his own Cup team next year. Kevin Harvick remains in the No. 29 Goodwrench Chevrolet next year, but team owner Richard Childress isn't ready to reveal whether AOL will return or a new sponsor (maybe Jack Daniels whiskey) will get his No. 30 Chevy.
Gone fishin'
Dale Earnhardt Inc. has extended its relationship with Bass Pro Shops. The outdoor recreation store chain will sponsor Martin Truex Jr. for the full '05 Busch Series schedule, plus seven Nextel Cup races. Truex, DEI and BPS will move to Cup full-time in 2006.
