This is the third installment in a series of articles on the rise and fall of the Roman Republic.

In all of human history, there have been few spectacles to rival the great battles of the ancient world with their pageantry, color--and awful carnage. And few battles of that age could match the drama that unfolded under the hot Italian sun one August morning in 216 B.C. near Cannae during the Second Punic War.
