On February 13, 2003, in Montague, Texas, a car driven by William Minor IV was struck from behind by another vehicle, rupturing its fuel tank and igniting a fire that quickly spread from the rear to the interior. Minor was knocked unconscious.

Another motorist, Terry Smith of Graham, witnessed the accident. He stopped, ran to the burning car, and managed to force the driver's-side door open. Smith released Minor's safety belt and extinguished his smoldering hair and shirt. Then, only moments before flames engulfed ...
