Thank you for your article on the Pentagon attack of 9/11 ("Getting the Facts Straight" by Dennis Behreandt, August 23 issue). I, like the author, am aware of the doubts that Flight 77 actually crashed into the Pentagon. These doubts are based on a number of facts. For one, there appears to be no identifiable portion of a 757 on any of the available photos. The most likely candidate was the piece of cowling shown in a photo in the article, but no one to my knowledge has determined this to be part of a 757. This is in sharp contrast to the usual plane crash situation whereby almost the entire plane can be reconstructed from the parts that are found.

Another problem is the government's response to this controversy. They initially indicated they had no video of the impact. Then when it was speculated that it might have been a truck bomb, the government brought forth selected still pictures of a security camera video (two of which are shown in the article). But this raised several new doubts. Why lie about not having a video in the first place? Why not release the full video? Why was the aircraft only shown hiding behind a post with an exhaust trail visible? Why was there a visible trail which is uncharacteristic for a jet? Why was the fireball at impact white-hot, which is characteristic of an explosion, rather than a reddish hue which one might expect in a fireball from a jet plane crash? Why were all nearby videos from private sources confiscated and ...
