Nov. 5--The local livestock industry is not happy with the government's decision to reduce the import tariff on soybean meal to 4 percent from 5 percent, calling the cut too small to help reduce their losses.
The committee on animal feed policy, which is comprised of the finance, commerce, agriculture and industry ministers, agreed at a meeting yesterday to reduce the tariff by 1 percent instead of removing it altogether as requested by the local industry. The 5 percent tariff has been applied since 1997 to protect the local soybean industry, which produces about 350,000 tonnes annually.
