VW draws love and disappointment
I've enjoyed VWs for most of my driving life (40 years). But your Oct. 18 Cover Story on the '06 GTI makes me consider divorcing the brand I love. VW has slipped on quality and left its fans with nothing special to cheer about for years. During that time it courted the high-end SUV and super-expensive cruiser markets. As a fill-in, we've been teased with '06 GTI hype for almost three years. I've never seen a product so celebrated so far in advance of its launch, while there is nothing exciting in the pipeline... R32 aside.

I read your story about the new VW GTI with disappointment. It says, "VW's design team looked back nearly 30 years to the first GTI for inspiration.'' Really? From the photos, it looks more like a Toyota Matrix or Mazda3. What happened to the innovative design that started the high-performance hatchback revolution? It appears VW's design team came from Japan.

I liked the photo on page 21 of the Eiffel Tower reflected in the GTI's grille badge. It brought back memories of when I worked in France 20 years ago. My first-generation GTI and I spent many great weekends in Paris.
