Will Chevy stay?
Chevrolet has a contract to compete in the Indy Racing League through the 2005 season. Its future beyond that has not been determined, program manager Joe Negri said. A decision could be made by upper management as early as November, he said, and there is apparently reason for concern.
"When you see what the economy has done, and you see what General Motors' [financial numbers were] last quarter, of course I'm concerned,'' Negri said.
Of the IRL's three engine manufacturers, Chevy appears to be the one teetering on the fence. Honda is satisfied with its IRL involvement and will be a major player in the sanctioning body's first-ever non-oval event at St. Petersburg, Florida, in April. Toyota's IRL commitment lies somewhere between the two.
Negri vowed Chevy will redouble its 2005 season efforts, particularly after not winning a race or a pole in 2004. Honda won 14 of the 16 races; Toyota won the first and the last.
"We're about a month out from nailing down our specs for Homestead,'' Negri said.
Is Hak back?
