2005 Jaguar X-Type 3.0 Sportwagon
Date in fleet: Sept. 23-Oct. 11 As-tested price: $37,495 Powertrain: 3.0-liter V6; awd, five-speed automatic Output: 227 hp @ 6800 rpm, 206 lb-ft @ 3000 rpm Curb weight: 3761 pounds
GRITZINGER: You could have a serious love-hate relationship with this car. Love the wagon cargo room; hate the plain-Jane wagon-esque rear end. Love the Jag design cues inside and out; hate the lack of Jag quiet and comfort. Love the powertrain for smooth passing acceleration; hate the abrupt throttle tip-in. Love the nice leather seats; hate the tight interior confines. It goes on.
While the car is great in a straight line, I think the wagon's added weight gives it more body roll than I recall from our long-term X-Type sedan. As a result, this doesn't feel as confident a handling vehicle. I suppose high-g cornering and hauling groceries don't mix anyway.
2005 Ford Five Hundred
Date in fleet: Sept. 30-Oct. 14 As-tested price: $30,410 Powertrain: 3.0-liter V6; awd, CVT Output: 203 hp @ 5750 rpm, 207 lb-ft @ 4500 rpm Curb weight: 3815 pounds
MORRISON: Though closer in size to the Taurus, the Five Hundred is more the spiritual heir to Ford's staple Crown Victoria than some new-age Taurus: It's big-man, at least it seems big-soft, comfortable, effortless to drive. And what's this? All-wheel drive? Very nice. But-and I hate to say this, I really do- if this is the best Ford can do with a premium sedan concept, then I'm worried for Ford.
